Thursday, May 29. 2008Idolatry of the Gun
We pray for victim and perpetrator because we believe that to be human is to be created in the image of God – we are wonderfully made. To be human is to be connected to God – we are divinely made. To be human is to be created in goodness and blessed – we are mightily made. It is this connection to the divine and to each other that is desecrated in each act of gun violence.
I once heard violence defined as, “…that act of forgetting who we are; brothers and sisters of one another, each one of us a child of God. Violence can occur in those moments when we forget and deny our basic identity as God’s children, when we treat others as if they were worthless instead of priceless and cling to our own selfish desires, possessions and security. In the effort to claim our inheritance as loved children of God, we must claim our love for one another and choose life. We must remember who we are…” Indeed it is time for us to remember who we are. As people of faith we must stand up and ask – What poverty of spirit causes Americans to so glorify their guns – in movies, on television, in video games, on the streets of our neighborhoods and in the halls of our Congress? It is time for us to awaken our country to the blasphemy of gun violence.
Our God is a God who said, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” When Charlton Heston held up a rifle at the NRA convention in Denver Colorado just weeks after the shootings at Columbine High School and shouted, ‘…from my cold, dead hands…’ he was making an idol of the gun. When our Congressional representatives give the gun industry immunity from prosecution, when they refuse to regulate guns as consumer products, when they refuse to enact gun laws such as the AWB that will save thousands of lives, when Congress does the bidding of the gun lobby in exchange for campaign dollars they are making an idol of the gun.
Idolatry of the gun seduces with false power and teases with illusive security. The idolatry of the gun make the American obsession with possession of guns seem like freedom when all it really offers is a life lived in fear. How can we see the face of God in every person or claim them as our brothers and sisters when we are so afraid that we think we must carry a concealed weapon everywhere we go? How can we stretch our arms wide towards God’s goodness when one hand is grasping a gun? How can we depend only on God when next to our hearts we’re wearing a weapon?
As people of faith we must stand witness to the destructive power of gun violence. We must say we will rely not on guns, but on God. We will affirm not guns, but life. We will bless not guns, but our common humanity. We must hold up a higher value saying that our children’s lives are a sacred trust and that human life is more important than the so-called right to bear arms.
Every time we hold a vigil we are standing up to violence. We are standing together black, brown and white, expressing our connection to each other and to the divine.
At our vigils we claim each other as brothers and sisters committed to the challenge of living peacefully in our homes and in our neighborhoods. Every time we hold a vigil we honor the lives lost to violence and remind ourselves and others that there is hope even in the face of the greatest of human evil. It’s never easy to go to the site of a homicide. We never know what to expect. We don’t know who will be there, what someone might say, how we will be received. But somehow the most amazing thing always happens. Somehow the scene of a violent act becomes sacred space.

Rachel,
I agree with you on how we are made, but please remember that God did give us free will. At no time, did God every say violence was not righteous, just violence for the wrong reasons. Where are the posts about knife violence or baseball bat violence or frying pan violence. The gun doesn't make violence any more or less righteous. Even Jesus told his disciples to buy swords. We can look others in the face and see God, but we can also see people who chose evil. By protecting myself and others with a firearm, I am affirming life. My own life, that of my family, even the person who might be attacking me. Hopefully, I will never have to fire a weapon in defense but if I do, shouldn't I try to remove evil from the world?
Rev. Smith.
Charlton Heston did not use the "Cold Dead Hands" statement at the '99 Denver Convention. It was first used a year later. Wouldn't that be bearing false witness?
You write: "When our Congressional representatives give the gun industry immunity from prosecution," you fail to note that the prosecutions (civil liability torts, actually) were unprecedented in their misapplication of the extant law on liability, and have all (except one still under appeal, I believe) been dismissed by competent judicial legal authority. I believe the legal process demonstrated that these lawsuits were an attempt to bleed manufacturers of firearms into either bankruptcy or into agreement to extra-legal gun control. Attempting to stop this underhanded attempt to remove individual rights through judicial fiat, the Congress saw fit by huge majorities in both houses, by both parties, to reign in the extra-legal attack on gun ownership and gun manufacture.
You write, "when they [Congress] refuse to regulate guns as consumer products," you fail to note that guns are among the most heavily regulated legal products in the country, with over 20,000 laws on the books regarding their use, possession and manufacture. What kind of "regulation" are you looking for beyond the SAAMI self-regulation of the production side of the industry and the already-extant governmental regulation of the consumer side of the industry? You write: "when they [Congress] refuse to enact gun laws such as the AWB that will save thousands of lives," the truth is that the AWB made zero impact upon criminal use of guns, according to the several government-sponsored, peer-reviewed scientific studies of the AWB, a conclusion also reached by the gun control groups (Brady, et al.), and the Clinton administration). You write, "when Congress does the bidding of the gun lobby in exchange for campaign dollars they are making an idol of the gun." I would note that lobbyists for everything from ethanol subsidies to retirees' Social Security to environmental regulation to despotic genocidal foreign governments are not included in your list of idolatrous lobbying. Why single out a legal, publicly transparent lobby that promotes a civil right (gun ownership) and a human right (self defense), when all these other ripe targets for the standard of idolatrous lobbying exist? If you can be so very wrong in just one sentence of your article, what should I make of both your premise and your conclusion?
"If evil men were not now and then slain, it would not be a good world for weaponless dreamers."
-Rudyard Kipling
Rachel,
Being prepared for what may happen in life doesn't mean I live my life in fear. Do you own a fire extinguisher or smoke alarm? If so, are you living your life in fear of fire? How about auto insurance? Home insurance? Following your logic if someone has auto insurance they are in fear and should get rid of their car. I would like to point out the unchanging nature of God. Wouldn't you agree that the God of the Old Testament is the same God of the New Testament? If so, how does the authorized use of violence become complete non-violence? Gen 9:6 Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed Sound like predatory violence should be answered with protectionary violence to me. Exodus 21:12 He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death. Rev. 13:10 Shows that God is consistent :"if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed"
Greetings Rev Smith,
While I applaud your stated goal of reducing violence(at least I hope you care about violence that does not involve firearms), I think you need to go back and read your own words. "I once heard violence defined as, “…that act of forgetting who we are; brothers and sisters of one another, each one of us a child of God. Violence can occur in those moments when we forget and deny our basic identity as God’s children, when we treat others as if they were worthless instead of priceless and cling to our own selfish desires, possessions and security. In the effort to claim our inheritance as loved children of God, we must claim our love for one another and choose life. We must remember who we are…” You seem to be light years ahead of those at the Brady Campaign by simply recognizing that violence is committed by living breathing people. That's where the focus must lie if you want to make a positive difference. Focus on the people committing violence. Change the minds of people committing violence. Change the hearts of the people committing violence. Going after law-abiding firearms owners simply drys up what could be your greatest grass roots support network. Don't make the same mistake the Brady Campaign has. Deception is not God's will.
I do realize that God Loves Sinners as well, 1st John 4:19 declares, "We love him, because he first loved us."
The truth is that I have never seen such horrible groups like the Brady Campaign or the Million M march they believe they have a license to sin. These are truly not Christian organization in fact they are thinly veiled Hate groups, and I am surprised a person using the name of God would align themselves with these hate groups. Firearms are not the problem, the true problem is people losing there way. Persons pretending to be tools of God pervert and promote bad behavior discourage self discipline, self reliance as taught in scripture. For shame those who use the name of God to propagate lies even worse to raise money. I suggest you talk to God about the evil alliance you have made.
My guns protect your right to practice your religion.
Remember that! Many years ago a wise man said: "Whoever has a purse should take it along, and likewise a bag, and whoever does not have one should sell his cloak and buy a sword." I have the sword, and I will defend your right to your beliefs even if they are not the same as "my one true religion"
Just when I thought the Brady Campaign had hit bottom they sink even lower. Instead take their sleazy site, turn the color scheme blue and attempt to pass this off as religious.
All the while begging for more money, but in the name of God “this time”. The Brady Campaign has no shame. Using God to make themselves look legitimate if you read scripture you will know there is a place in Hell for the Brady Bunch leadership and its loyal followers. I have to go the odor here is horrible here.
You really have no clue, do you? What a happy little bubble you must live in.
Out here in the real world, the reason I feel comfortabe extending the hand of freindship to my fellow man is that I am prepared to defend myself if he is among the few who are not into fellowsgip but rather, predation. There are very bad people out there, who strike fast and hard and are gone long before the police stop by, and you would have them rob me and beat me and worse, again. I would not. I will not. I refuse to live in fear when I can instead live in confidence, ready to meet any man as a brother -- and to defend myself against the deadly few. I am a loving, peaceable person. And I carry a gun every day. My gun is an inanimate object, lacking volition and intent; it presents no threat. I am no threat any peaceable person. I'm not even a threat to the wicked, only to those who would do me harm. You, on the other hand, vent your hostility upon a whole class of people, most of whom you do not know. There is a word for that: prejudice.
What happened to your May 27th post?
Dishonesty is revolting. Dishonesty served under color of Christianity? Perhaps you know where all liars -- and their Father -- will spend eternity. G*d help you. DD
Nobody needs to fret too much over the "Christianity" of the good "reverend's" little group. Such interfaith nonsense waters down their "god" to little more than a cross between Santa and your doddering grandfather who sends you money on your birthday and overlooks your naughty behavior.
Not once has the "reverend" spoken of the divinity of Jesus Christ, the necessity of salvation or the sinful nature of man. Typical liberal godless religion (be nice, keep your lawn trimmed, vote for Obama).
Just look in the "prayer" section: Muslim prayers, Hindu prayers, the wisdom of Ceasar Chavez.
"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." Unless you bow down to Sarah Brady and trust in liberal politics for your salvation.
Rev. Smith:
Don't be discouraged by the comments. You have it exactly right: there is an idolatory of the gun. When you point this out, you will be attacked and maligned. These are people who live in fear and ignorance. As a result, they want everyone to live in such a state.
So Jade, If we are the ones living in fear, why are you afraid to debate Ahab over the now deleted "Guns and Meat" post which you said he was wrong on?
No Jade, we are not dictating to others how they should live. You and your ilk are trying to force us to adopt your world view.
You advocate that I give up my property. What have I asked you to give up?
Dear Rachel:
I just found your blog. I am pleased that you are working with the troubled and the lost people, bringing them a spiritual and moral message of peace, of self-respect and respect for others, and the wholeness that is felt when one lives a just and honorable life. Indeed, many people in our nation lack these fundamentally important things. But I hope you work toward these things without attempting to also abrogate those all-important, God-given rights of just, honorable, and respectful defense of self, family, and loved ones from those evil individuals in the world. I too like to think that evil can be overcome with good - yet when that evil is being immediately perpetrated against me or my family, I shall overcome that evil with lethal force. Not doing so would be immoral, and irresponsible to society. I respect and honor those around me, yet those who would choose, for whatever reason, to unjustly perpetrate evil against me or those I love need to be stopped. In some situations, the message of peace and love is too little, too late. I trust you have the life experience to acknowledge that. I strongly support self-defense, and the right to keep and bear arms. This is a God-given right, a natural right, and a fundamentally important right. This right shall not be infringed - for any reason. Again, bless you for bringing the word of peace and hope. I have hope for you and this blog, but your links to the Brady Campaign make me wonder about your motives. The Brady Campaign’s motive is to criminalize civilian ownership of firearms - a motive that is not only morally wrong, but with an end-result that unconstitutional (illegal) as well. are suspect. Please spread the message of peace, love, hope, and respect, but do not work toward infringing our right to arms in the process. PS: Thanks for allowing comments on your blog. Few (if any) blogs of this nature allow for comments. I commend your open-ness.
Zorro,
I would request a favor from you. Let's keep the comments respectful. Arguing the issue is a better way of showing our values than attacking the person. Thanks
I am an owner of a firearm but the only thing I worship is God.
I belive that there is a fundamental truth to what you are saying in that we need to work to reduce violence in the world. The violent acts perpetrated by teens on a girl they did not agree with by beating her. This was a planned assault perpetrated by children without the use of weapons. Does it mean that is less important that we try to prevent this type of action? You state "When our Congressional representatives give the gun industry immunity from prosecution, when they refuse to regulate guns as consumer products, when they refuse to enact gun laws such as the AWB that will save thousands of lives," when was the last time that you saw a criminal care if it was illegal to have a gun? I do not belive that the armed robber who walks into a liquor store with an illegally possesed gun thought to themselves "I can't do this! It is illegal for me to own a gun." I would venture to say never because Laws are followed by those with good intentions not those with evil intentions. Gun control laws prevent the good people of this country from protecting themselves. If a firearms manufacturer is responsible because someone used their product in an illegal manner then a manufacturer of kitchen utensils should be resposible if someone uses a butchers knife or meat cleaver to commit murder. Hey lets make the store responsible since they sold it. If my gun was sitting locked in it's case and it shot someone they yes the manufacturer should be responsible because problem was due to a malfunction. If a driver loses control of their car or is talking on their cellphone and kills someone in an accident is the auto manufacturer at fault or the cellphone company or carrier? Why is a firearm any different. Now if the wheel flew off the car and struck someone and it was found that the wheel was not properly installed at the factory then yes they hold a responsibility. The only reason these laws were enacted was to help reduce frivelous law suits that are clogging up our courts, and contributing to the beief in our society that nothing is our fault. God tells us that we are to take responsibility for our actions. Not blame inanimate objects. That is the same as saying that the golden idol made the people worship it. I belive that I will have to answer to God on my day of reconing for all of my actions during the time I spend on earth. I also feel that God has charged me with protecting my family from those who wish to harm it. Family can be construed as my immediate family, those close to me, or all of Gods children. I would much rather answer to him for an act protecting an innocent member of my family rather than why I did not prevent a perpatrator of violence from harming one of his children. To quote a song my 5yr daughter sings: "Children of God, all one family" I applaude your openness for keeping discussion open about such topics. I pray that your choice to speak up against violence is not silenced. I however hope that you are truely against violence and not using a Gun as an Idol in the way that the politicians of our day do. Remember, This country was created by God fearing christians who took up arms against a tyranical government and created the foundation for one of the greatest nations in the world. A nation where all people are free to voice their opinion and practice whatever religion they choose. Give the power to God not the politician who seeks power out of selfishness.
What would you if you happened upon a violent act being perpetrated by someone in illegal possesion of a firearm?
Would you be willing to attempt to stop it or would you hide and cower hoping that the police respind before the victim is killed? I am willing to meet my God at whatever moment he chooses without fear of my actions. Are you?
The pilgrims arived in 1620 with their guns. The first school shooting was in 1968. The first "mass"school shootings happened in the 1990s. Since the first landing in 1620 The government took God out of schools and other public places, some parents have become friends instead of disciplinarians,or worse some parents choose not to care what their kids do as long as they don't bother the "parents". If one was to blame anything for the way things are in this world blame it on moral decay not gun ownership because moral decay IS the reason I own a firearm.
Those who present a Gun as an Idol are the ones creating false Idols.
Guns are an easy target. For those who are unfamiliar with them they bring immediate thoughts of violece against the innocent. It carries an image of finality and immediately strikes fear into a person. Guns are a thing foucising on erradicating a thing is much easier to do than focus on erradicating an intangible such as violence. I hope that God gives you the wisdom to remove the filter of Gun from you mission and to focus on erradicating violence. For in a world without violence we will have peace. Until that time I will have my Piece. If you look at statistics on Violence in places where the citizens are prohibited from protecting themselves -vs- those that are the restricted locations have a higher rate of violence perpetrated by Guns than all violent acts combined in places where the citizens are allowed to protect themselves. How does your form of Gun Control work? I know how mine does, Cock, Aim, Pull the trigger, Repeat as neccessary. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you. |
